Pros: afforable price, dark colors, does it's job
Cons: may be missing some features some people are looking for
In a perfect world our life is not so crazy and we have planned a weekend to go out of town and investigate various car seats for our children. As our children have grown, however, sports and school seem to take up most of our time ... even on the weekends. As two of our children have still needed to be in a form of a car seat due to age, height, and weight we have needed to change out and upgrade various seats. Not having time to go out of town and shop around, we headed to our local Walmart when we needed to transition our youngest child, 5 years old and in Kindergarten, into a booster seat system.
I already had in mind generally what I wanted. I did NOT want a booster seat, and felt more comfortable with a full booster system with back. I was familiar and comfortable with Evenflo and knew we'd most likely find this type at our local Walmart, but I was hoping for more color choices. All of the patterns and color options were out of stock except for this one, Tonal Maze. This is a black and gray zigzag maze type pattern - which hides wear and tear and spills, dirt, and messes, but is not very feminine. Thankfully, this is by far not the first time we've had to have the "functional" car seat discussion with one of our two daughters and they overall are pretty used to having dark colored and not girlie car seats.
The Evenflo Big Kid Sport Booster Car Seat comes in various prints, and costs around $30. It is designed for children weighing 40 - 100 pounds and 38 - 57 inches tall. The seat itself weighs about 10 pounds and is pretty easy to install and move. It does have a way to remove the back to make this a backless booster seat if you choose to do so.
This booster seat, like many, has adequate padding, and when trying it in the store my daughter proclaimed that it was "more comfortable" than the others we had her try. The padding and cover are removable and washable, though we haven't needed to do so yet. Typically car seat covers are such a pain to put back on that we try and surface wash wherever possible - and this booster seat surface washes well. Again, since it is darker in color and my child is older and does not typically eat or drink in the car, we've had it several months and it still looks pretty new.
The Evenflo Big Kid Sport Booster Seat boasts 6 height adjustments and we've had no trouble finding the right height for our daughter. The system was a breeze to put in our van, and is easily removed. It has two cup holders that are plastic molded and pull out from the sides. The strap is comfortable and adjustable and the system works well with our existing captains chair style van seat.
This is probably not the "top of the line" model and so missing some bells and whistles others may be wanting. It does not have a pillow and the padding, while adequate, can be a complaint of some children. Also sleeping in this booster seat can become uncomfortable since it sits straight up and does not have a terrible amount of neck and head support.
This booster seat does everything it is designed to do in terms of providing a secure seat for your child while "boosting" them up in the seat to the level of the seat belt. It meets our daily needs well and was within our price range for what we were looking for.
