| loganbs's Full Review: Kalamazoo Brewing Company |
This is the brewery that got me into microbrews. Bell's Amber Ale was their 1st beer I had and was amazed at how much better than the big commercial breweries' beer this beer was. Well that was years ago and I now sample whatever micros I can. But Bell's is still at the top of the list.
My wife and I stopped at the brewery a few years ago while on vacation. We actually planned the vacation somewhat around the brewery visit, because we were both so taken with their beers. At that time their brewery pub was small and dark and, though worth the trip, somewhat unappealing. But the beers on tap were wonderful. Their Stout and Porter are my favorites, and excellent examples of their styles.
We've stopped in a few more times over the years. The pub has been renovated and is now larger and more inviting. They've added a beer garden out back and regularly have entertainment. This is the kind of pub I'd frequent regularly, if I lived closer (I'm 2-3 hrs away). You can tell that there is a steady stream of regular locals (a testament to the pub and its beer quality). One stop in was on the way to Chicago, and our bartender gave us some great suggestions on beer spots in Chicago. They also serve a mean salsa...
Though new micros have popped up everywhere, Bell's is still one of the best. Their beers, tho not intended for Miller Lite drinkers (a plus in my book), are flavorful and varied (if you're a stout fan, their Expedition Stout is a must-try (strong and thick). If you find yourself in Michigan and close to Kalamazoo, stop in. You'll be glad you did.
