Kalamazoo Brewing also known as Bell's Brewing is the absolute best brewery i know of in America. They make the beers only one way, and that way is HUGE. These are strong flavored beers for the advanced beer drinker. All beers are unfiltered and bottle conditioned meaning you will find a haze of yeast and possibly some sediment in each bottle. Each brew is totally distinctive with no rival anywhere that i have seen. Distribution is limited ot the Midwest right now but look out for them soon elsewhere. The Amber ale is the mildest and has a beautiful malt sweetness. Best Brown Ale comes out in the winter and has a huge chocolatey mouthfeel and low dose of hops. The Kalamazoo Stout is big, thick and hoppy with a raisin/smoke/leather malt profile. The Expedition Stout is a massive imperial russian stout thick with licorice flavors. Double Cream Stout is a full bodied thick smooth sweet stout. Cherry Stout (yes they bottle 4 stouts!!!) is like Kalamazoo stout with fresh Michigan cherry juice and tastes like a chocolate covered cherry. The only fruit beer that I really love to drink. The pale ale is made with Belgian biscuit malt and a massive dose of spicy citrusy hops. Two Hearted Ale is the IPA and hands down is the bitterest beer made on earth. Oberon is the summer wheat which is an american styled wheat with a drinkable spicy character. Third Coast is the plain old "beer" of the lineup and tastes similar to th amber. Third Coast Old Ale is an aged strong ale with a lot of alchohol malt and hops. Eccentric ale is released one day a year for 5 dolalrs per 12 ounce bottle. Seems steep, but it is worth it. This is a huge barley wine ale that ages well. Cellar a case of this stuff. The Porter is the best on earth with a big roasty chocolate velvet flavor. Harvest ale is brewed in the amber style with all michigan grown ingrediants. The Sparkling ale tastes like a mix between champagne and beer. They also occasionally bottle other beers like their limited release Batch 2,000. Sometimes Larry and his brewers will make limited release brewery only beers which are always great. I try to make the 4 hour trek to Kalamzoo a few times a year just to sit in their cool little pub and play chess, sipping fresh Bells Beer. Get the bottled product then visit the brewery. Outstanding.
