| ambernop's Full Review: Kalamazoo Brewing Company |
Bell's, located in Kalamazoo, MI, is one of the few breweries I've found that has always been, and remains, true to it's craft. Since microbrews have become "fashionable," small breweries have been popping up all over the country, and Michigan is no exception. Which makes life much easier for those of us who wouldn't drink Bud or Miller if it was the last thing on earth. Unfortunately, most new breweries have been brewing with just such Bud drinkers in mind. Their beers lack flavor--they're not too bitter, or too dark, or too anything that might offend somebody someplace. Bummer. The good beer search continues...
However, this isn't the case with Bell's. They produce an extensive list of porters, stouts, and ales, and you'd be hard-pressed to find any one of them lacking in flavor or aroma. The stouts (there are many, thank you Larry Bell, clearly a man after my own heart) are all robust, dark, and delicious. The Expedition Stout is for only the strongest among us--unless you're a fan of serious imperial stouts, this one very possibly will kill you.
Speaking of things that can kill you...if you like hops (I mean REALLY like hops), the Two Hearted Ale will convince you you've died and gone to heaven. Hoppy hoppy hoppy. As an IPA should be, right?
And these examples are standard for Bell's--an indian pale ale should be hoppy, so they hop the hell out of theirs. And it's wonderful. Stouts should be dark, roasty, and chocolatey--and there's are. None of this watered-down everyman's beer here. Thank goodness.
