| ChuckV's Full Review: Samuel Adams (Boston Beer Company) |
Sam Adams has been around for a long time and was one of the first microbreweries. Now, they are huge and some people consider them just another macrobrew. True, their beers can be found in any supermarket in the country, but in this case quantity does not destroy the quality. Sam Adams has gone big time but has not skimped on their recipes or innovation nor their commitment to the hand crafted beer movement.
Sam Adams Lager is still one of the finest lagers ever made with it's spicy hop flavor and golden color. The Boston Stock Ale is a maltier version of the lager making for a more balanced fruity ale. Spring ale is a Kolsh style light golden beginner beer. Summer ale is a pilsner like ale made with a fruity tasting Grain of Paradise. Octoberfest and Winter ale are the other 2 seasonals and both are extremely malty and good if you do not like hoppy beers. Double Bock is also a very malty German style dark lager. The Tripple bock on the other hand is not beer like at all and should be drank only after a few years of aging. It is very high in alchohol and is not drinkable untill after about 3 years of aging in my opinion. Sam's Cream Stout is another winner with a smooth roastry character. Honey Porter is a dark almost too sweet ale made with honey. The Belgian White Ale is a wheat made with orange peel and other spices that is spicy and refreshing.
The only Sam Adams beers that I do not like are the Cherry Wheat and the Cranberry Lambic. The Wheat has a fake medicinal cherry flavor that is overpowering and the Cran Lambic is nothing at all like a real lambic from Belgium.
Overall, these are not really true to style beers but they are still distinctive, easy to find, and tasty.
