| Slappy_Max's Full Review: Napa Ridge Pinot Noir 1997 |
I must first say that you are not now reading the opinion of one who engages in wine-snobbery. To be honest I have not even enjoyed the wine experience much until lately. While planning a dinner for visiting family I decided to roll the dice on yet another wine. I am always apprehensive about this because my choice is quite often very poor. This Napa Ridge 1997 Pinot Noir exceeded my expectations, and actually brought me a memorable and enjoyable wine experience. I served it with a substantially seasoned beef roast, baby potatoes, carrots glazed with apple-blossom honey, green beans with almonds, and potato bread. I couldn't have asked for a more pleasant wine that evening. Though the label boasts of its' medium body and wild berry flavors, I found that it was very mild. More appropriately subtle. In the context of this meal the approach of the wine was mildly fruity. To my surprise it did not have the tannic, bitter, or bold punch that I have typically not enjoyed in dark wines. It was pleasantly dry. After the initial berry flavors floated of my palette I sensed a slight woodsy taste. And that was it. Though the label brags of a complex wine I found it quite simple. I found it all the more appealing because of it. I also found it an incredible value for the price. I will rate it a four out of five, but bear in mind that I've never given anything a five.
