Pros: Mellow and ribs of beef (boef) not required.
Cons: The bouquet does not quite match what you expect from its taste.
The Bottom Line: Implacable skiers demand this wine and that is why you should try this wine. If you are only an apres ski, drink don't think.

| thestory's Full Review: Ridge Zinfandel Lytton Springs 1997 |
This blend tastes great. It is a blend consisting of 75% zinfandel, 20% petite sirah and 5% carignane. How can I tell the proportions with so much certainty? The ingredients are listed on the label. Is this a new law to protect the consumer? Are there really people that are allergic to carignane?
For the adjectives see the following: (I am compiling a data base listing words used by professional reviewers to describe the sensations that come to their mind while sampling wines. So far I have 220 or so listed. They actually look around the room and rattle off what ever they are looking at. Oak, rose, lemony, a touch of raspberry or is it strawberry? ... pepper, fruit, etc.). Back to the words that come to my mind regarding this flavorful wine... The touch of sweetness pulls this wine slightly away from dry, but it is not cloying, and my taste buds do not need to gulp tea to clean my palate. This wine has a clean enough taste, and I resist expectorating (even discreetly) it is too good for that. Yes, of course there is the expected touch of oak and tannin. The wine tasting chamber I am in is an enclosure with plasterboard walls. I have yet to read a wine review that hints of dry wall or what ever the wall is made of. Once, some wag did throw in "brick."
The color is that agreeable hue we call, if the French will excuse me, burgundy. We must not call bubbly "Champagne" you know. ( I know I'm rambling, but bear with me for I have lived over 3/4 of a century and have popped more than a few corks). Besides, the reason so many wine reviews tend to be verbose is that the reviewer is paid by the word expended. Having written that, I will close my dissertation, or do you want the 220 word glossary? You really have to try this wine for your self to find out why I is so popular in Aspen, CO.
