Pros: heavyweight, durable, doesn't scratch or chip easily, cleans up well, looks terrific
Cons: holds heat from microwave a long time, can break
When I first decided to change over my tableware from my thin Corelle dishes that weren’t quite as durable as they’d touted, my immediate need was new plates. Other pieces could be added later on, but the plates were pretty important. Once I had decided on FiestaWare for my new tableware, I ended up getting a number of place settings in various colors. These place settings included the FiestaWare Dinner Plate.
The FiestaWare Dinner Plate is 10 1/2 inches in diameter. The size is typical of most dinner plates. It’s the optimal size for a typical dinner with plenty of room for the meal whether it’s one dish or five.
I chose to get a variety of different colors rather than just one set color. All of the plates were brilliant shades of each color that I ordered. The shading was fairly even and bright rather than soft, subtle, pale colors. The trademark Fiesta rings are on the outer edge of the plate with a few ridges in the circles to allow for better gripping. It’s only here that the coloring fades a bit, almost to white in the ridges of the rings. There are also a few rings in the center of the plate, but these don’t have the deep ridges that the rings at the edge of the plate do. The edge of the plate also inclines a bit to keep liquids more toward the center of the plate and prevent spills.
A tip I’ll give here that we were told in Weight Watchers is that for some reason, plates the color red inspire people to eat more. For that reason, I usually bypass the red plate and stick with the deeper, darker colors. Even the paler colors have a richer tone to them than other place settings I’ve seen or actually owned. There’s just something about the way Fiesta makes the plates that brightens up even the softest colors.
The FiestaWare Dinner Plate is made of vitrified china. It’s quite heavy rather than having a delicate feel to it. These can and will break, although it’s not an easy thing to do. The plates are finished off with a non-porous lead-free glaze that is also chip-resistant. This not only gives the plate a very nice look but also helps prevent chipping and scratching. With everyday use for several years, the finish of my plates looks just about as good as the day it came out of the box. There are a few nicks here and there in the finish, but overall the plates still look great when I set them on the table.
These plates are safe for the dishwasher, microwave, or oven. It makes everything so versatile. If I’ve made something in the oven that night and someone in the family is due home late, I can just make up a plate for them and leave it in the warm oven until they come home. If it goes too late, the plate can then go in the microwave. I’ve used the plates in the microwave numerous times and I do find that the plates get hot in the microwave, although it seems to be nothing more than I’ve experienced with other plates. I think because the FiestaWare Dinner Plate is a bit heavier than other tableware, it tends to hold the heat longer than some other tableware.
Cleaning these up is easy. Whether the kids are washing by hand or using the dishwasher, I don’t have difficulty with food sticking to the plate. The smooth finish really help food run off of the plate and it cleans up very nicely. The plates stack nicely one on top of the other in the cabinet and fit in a standard cabinet very well.
The FiestaWare Dinner Plate is available in all of the current colors Fiesta has issued. There are also many colors which have been “retired” but you can often poke around at various websites and find the plates. The price will be higher than the current collections, but if it’s a shade you are really looking for, that’s who you want to please.
I highly recommend the FiestaWare Dinner Plate. These have been the best plates I have had both for the durability and the look. My table looks nice and I don’t worry about the kids using them and scratching them or breaking them. If it happens, I can just go out and buy another color! Any excuse for more FiestaWare is good.
