I have been a faithful Shell MasterCard user now for about 6 years. I have found that the 5% on gas, 1% on other purchases can get me close to a free tank of gas every two months or so. I have pretty much stopped using my Discover and Visa cards, and use my Shell MasterCard as my primary card. Discover does give you money back, however, I only got about $15 last year (I doubt that it was close to 1% of my total), and earned much more gas than that with Shell.
Primarily I charge all my Shell gas and any larger purchases on my Shell card. If I am going to earn something, it might as well be gas. My Jeep gets about 16 miles per gallon, so I am filling up the 20 gallon tank fairly often.
The bill that is sent is very easy to read and will not leave you guessing about minimum amounts and finance information. If you do have a problem, they have 24 hour assistance. Also, if they notice your card is getting worn or difficult to swipe, they will automatically send you a new one.
Admittedly, their rates are a bit on the high side, but I think I can live with that when I get a tangible reward like a tank of gas every other month or so. I guess if you plan to finance the card, this might not be the best option, but if you intend to charge your gas and pay the card off in full, this might be a good idea (especially if you swear by Shell gas).
