Pros: Online account services are better than average in the industry.
Cons: Lying, deceitful company.
Misleading offers and flat out lies told over the phone.
I've had a Discover Card for over 12 years, so think about that as you read this opinion.
They use to have have an option for 5% cashback on something called the "Open Road" card. I was told they were discontinuing that back in 2010 and that I was being converted to the Rewards options. I was even issued a new credit card. I get emails every quarter asking me to sign up for the 5% cashback option for whatever the categories are for that particular quarter. So let's recap - I was issued a new card, told I was converted, and receive monthly emails asking me to sign up for the rewards. This would lead any rational person to believe they were signed up. Well - this quarter the cashback option is "Restaurants". So I proceeded to alter my spending to ensure I used my Discover Card for my dining out this past month. It was about $600 in dining out. This means I should get about $30 in cashback for this past month.
This is where it gets interesting. I did not get the 5% cashback. I use the online chat feature rfom the site and the representative tells me that I have an "Open Road" card and cannot receive the bonus, even though I signed up for it based on the email I received.
It sounds like they are playing games and giving customers the run around when I have followed every instructino to date in order to receive the bonus.
So if you've read this far, you now know why I'll be cancelling my Discover Card after 12+ years as a customer. And I'll have my wife cancel hers. And I'll tell everyone I know about this experience. And I'll ask them each to tell everyone they know. And I'll post my story to every opinion site I can find. Very dishonest and deceitful company, they should be ashamed.
