| tsmith7's Full Review: Discover Card |
I've had a Discover Card for almost 10 years and it has served as an emergency card that pretty much collects dust in the back of my dresser drawer. Just recently I received an email for an account statement (I found it marked as Junk Mail, however don't recall seeing one ever before this one) and followed the link online. I had no clue what my login was, but the site was very easy to use and eventually I logged in. When I got to the Account area I was surprised to see a balance for $6. I went to the latest statement and saw a charge for $2.99 for "Wallet Protection". Considering this card doesn't even make it into my wallet I was confused. When I called Discover they claimed that I had signed up, over the phone (right), for a "Register" service back in 2001! And, get this, they had converted this service to the "Wallet Protection" service and instead of billing $2.99 yearly they were billing monthly starting in February. Needless to say I had incurred a finance charge for not paying it last month. When I explained that I didn't recall ever signing up for the "Register" service they forwarded my to the Wallet Protection department. Once there I was told that they would cancel the service but would have to submit a request another department to track down the recording of the phone call in 2001 when I supposedly requested this service. In fairness, because I do vaguely remember how annoying they were in pushing these services every time I called, I could have wanted to get someone off the phone and said yes (however I highly doubt it), but regardless this is not the "customer is always" right treatment that I get with AMEX especially when it is a matter of a few dollars.
I'm going to see this thing through so that these charges are cleared from my account. And if this in anyway has impacted my credit I will consider legal action. Once it is resolved I will cancel my card.
My suggestion; stay away from Discover.
