I agree with your review -- very fair and balanced.

I was really happy with my Discover card until I started using it regularly and ran up a balance. I almost never carry a balance on any card -- my balance was the result of charging work-related travel expenses. Normally, I have enough money to just pay for the travel with my debit card and I try to do that as much as possible, but because I had other unusual expenses, I had to carry a balance while waiting an average of 10 weeks for reimbursement from my employer for each trip.

Whoa! I didn't realize that my interest rate had gone up as much as it had (I believe it's around 24%) and the balance started to spiral out of control. I ended up letting it get over over the limit because I had been paying the minimum while waiting for reimbursement from my employer. Then I started getting slammed with very high over-balance fees.

Since then, I've been battling for months to get my initially-modest balance back to zero. It's probably going to take at least two more months, and in the meantime, I'm paying a huge amount of interest.

My advice: Don't use this card unless you can pay off the entire balance, every month!

Trust me...it's not so easy to "just cancel the account". I opened a Discover Card account because my daughter bugged me to get her the freebie little bear they were offering as incentive. When I got the card, I immediately tore it up, because I already use AmEx & Visa, and didn't want another credit card bill. Then I started getting calls from Discover at all hours of the day and evening about my account...why wasn't I using it...would I like to activate it...would I like to order more cards for family members, etc. I explained over and over that I don't have the card and wanted to cancel the account. I've told the same story to a dozen different customer service agents over the course of several months, and they all give me the run around because I can't provide the account number. I've given my phone number, maiden name, address, ss#, etc., etc. I just got off the phone AGAIN, and have been told the account is closed. I sure hope so. My advice...stay away from Discover Card, because it's a "til death do us part" relationship!

Discover Card annoyances (Reply to this comment)
by rpgaddict
My Discover card is really starting to aggravate me as well. One payment behind Discover calls ,leaves a message. I call Discover Card back, and tell them when the payment will be sent in by the 25th of this month. The Discover associate says ok I'll make a note of it on your Discover account in our computer. So what does Discover Card Classic do? They harass me with phone calls.Treatment like this, makes me wish I could just pay off the card and cancle my account.

Discover's Flaws (Reply to this comment)
by frazzledspice, frazzledspice is an Advisor on Epinions in Personal Finance
I think that most other cards also erase introductory interest rates if there are late payments (at least I have read other Epinions about other cards complaining about the very same thing.) And all the MC's and Visa's seem to charge overlimit fees and late payment charges that are similar.

I advised my son in college to get a Discover card for his first credit card and he is very happy. Why? He makes payments online, gets notifications when a new bill comes out, gets notifications if he hasn't remembered to pay 5 days before the bill is due. He can check his purchases and balances online. It's been perfect for someone who has many other things on his mind than bill-paying, and has helped him establish a perfect credit rating.

For this reason, I still recommend Discover, especially for students.

Great review.

if a relative asks you to loan them money on a credit card, take my advice and just say NO! You will never get paid back, and you will wind up with an enemy.

AND cash advance fees and exorbitant interest rates you get stuck with. Never a good thing. That must make the holiday visits fun
