Pros: customer service, cash advances, web site
Cons: their new-fangled curvy card is a huge hassle to use
The Bottom Line: It's easy to use, the APR is pretty good, the promotional rates are great. They don't do anything that I think is FANTASTIC, but they're the best card I've found.

| mathewq's Full Review: Discover Card |
I've had my Discover card for a couple years - I got it while I was in college. A couple months ago, I was upgraded from Discover Classic to Discover Platinum, which I guess happens to everyone but it still made me feel special. I got the curvy weirdo-shaped card, too, which looks very fancy but is a huge hassle because it takes up so much space...but that's about it for negative features for Discover.
The best thing about them is how nice they can be. For example: two years ago I called and asked if I was eligible for a lower APR. The guy I spoke to said, "no, but there's a promotion going on right now - if you get a new card there's a lower APR." I thought he was going to try to get me to sign up for a new card, but he went on, "I'll just go ahead and sign you up for that promotional rate." Sweet. This happened again a few months ago - right now I'm on a zero percent APR for the next couple months. All you have to do is call and ask. How awesome is that? I've tried it with some other companies and they're like, "what are you talking about?"
They have a great website, too. I have never seen a site that's as user-friendly. It's very easy to read bills and look at old bills, and to make payments. (One drawback is that you can only make one on-line payment per week.) And if they see unusual activity on your card they give you a call, which is nice.
The cash-back thing is a little deceptive - you get less cash back award if you don't shop at their preferred merchants like Barnes and Noble and Blockbuster. And they'll only give you the 1% cash back if you balance is very high - otherwise, it's half a percent, or a quarter of a percent. Still, that's better than most cards.
