I use the Discover Card for almost all my shopping. So long as a merchant accepts it, I will use it. I have found that most do. For many years Discover has paid me to use their card, by giving me a cash back bonus. I never carry a balance, so they have not made any interest from me. This could explain why after numerous years of being a card holder and charges made in the 10's of thousands, they have not yet offered me the platinum card. But that doesn't matter. I won't hold it against them. I could always request one from them.
A few years ago, Discover helped me out greatly. One of the main reason I use this card is the protection it offers if you don't get an item or if it's damaged. About 3 years ago, I contacted a contractor for some work on my property. Before any of the work could be started, he needed a 50% down payment, which was around $2,200. Thankfully, he accepted Discover Card, so I charged this. Thank god I did. This person never showed up to do any of the work.
We were having the usual contractor nightmare, calls not being returned, receptionist saying he's away. I heard excuses ranging from death in the family, illness, you name it. In the meantime, I had a bill to pay. I simply contacted Discover, explained to them the whole situation. They put a freeze on the charge, and they would investigate, and eventually they managed to track down this contractor and deal with him themselves. All I had to do at this point was wait. Well, after a few weeks, Discover notified me that the charge was being removed from my account. Was I ever so grateful. This person never had any intentions of doing this work. I have heard about so many people losing their money in cases involving contractors. Discover Card really came through, and for that, I have been, and probably always will be a loyal user of their card.
