I have been using the MBNA LL Bean Visa card for about two years now. I have earned quite a few $10 LL Bean gift certificates, which for sure is nice, but this is not the best credit card rewards program available, unless you like to spend a lot of money at LL Bean.
The card rewards you 3% on all LL Bean purchases and 0.5% on everything else. Those rewards are accumulated until you have $10 worth and then you are automatically mailed a $10 gift certificate to LL Bean. The certificates are easy to use if you order from LL Bean either via phone or the web site, simply enter in or give the id number and your purchase will be credited $10.
If you shop at LL Bean quite a bit, 3% reward is pretty good. If you don't spend much money from them, 0.5% on your purchases is nice to have, but there are other rewards programs out there that are better, such as the Discover Card cash back program. Especially since that is cash back, whereas with the LL Bean card you must use your rewards at LL Bean.
The interest rate is not very good, it is currently 16.99% APR I believe. Luckily I pay off my balance on this card every month, because I realize how high my finance charges will be if I do not.
I have had my problems with the customer service at MBNA. When first getting the card I had problems with them having my incorrect billing address. No big deal really, but when I called to get it straightened out, I had to speak with three operators before one could help me. There is no need for that. MBNA does, however, have a good website where you can check your account info and a pretty good automated phone system where you can check your phone info.
So in short, if you are a big LL Bean fan, this is a pretty good card to have, just watch out for the interest rate. If you are not, then look for a reward program that is more up your alley.
