Pros: Nice to look at. Easy to use points.
Cons: Long approval process.
The Bottom Line: I'm willing to give Amex another shot in the future.

I'm very shocked to see these stars! My experience with American Express has been horrible. First of all, it took them over a month to approve me despite my stellar credit. I had to make about 6 phone calls. Because I am an independent contractor, they could not verify my income, or bank account. I faxed them over 20 pages of my financial information (bank statements, mutual funds, stocks, etc.) and that was still not sufficient. So, I finally get approved, and receive the card and it has a $2,000 limit! My wife and I make all our purchases and pay bills with our cards to earn points. At this limit the card is useless to us. Once again, I had to call to up the limit to $10,000. If they approved me for the credit increase before I had even used the card, why not just send the thing with a higher credit limit?
One of my first purchases was at Wal-Mart, where there was a long line behind me.. the card would not go through and the cashier had to call amex while everyone gave me dirty looks.. lovely!
Recently, I made a hospital visit to settle my hospital bill. Since it was a significant charge ($4,600)I called amex beforehand to let them know so there would be no problems. The lady swipes the card.. and of course, it does not go through. I had to stand there on my cell phone for 30 minutes before amex got things straightened out and the transaction goes though.
The next time my wife went to use the card was at the gas station to buy $4 worth of ice cream... rejected!! 20 minutes of waiting on hold to find out that the card has been frozen because it is under "financial review".. no doubt, it was sent to financial review because of the $4,600 purchase the day before. What the hell is wrong with these people?? How are they still in business?? My wife and I both have excellent credit and never had any problems with our Lexus Pursuits Visa. We had never paid one cent of credit card interest, we pay in full every month! Good riddance to American Express!
9/6/07 update
Now that we've had this card a while I have forgiven Amex and have not had any additional problems with them. We had a very good experience getting a hotel room at the Hilton in Athens, Greece on very short notice using our points. Hopefully my initial experience with Amex was rare.
