| ninjafly's Full Review: American Express - Delta Airlines SkyMiles |
I was solicited by Delta for this card by telephone. They offered me something like 5000 miles for accepting the card and 5000 more if I charged some amount within a certain time frame. Forgive me it has been a year and a half. They said I would have no annual fee for the first year. This sounded like a really good deal so I accepted.
I also got an additional card for my wife and we decided on two points right away:
1 - We would pay the balance off every month
2 - We would use the cards for all the monthly things we already spend money on anyway. Food, fuel, household items and any bills that would accept Amex as a form of payment. For example your utility company. We wanted every possible charge to go on this card.
Over the course of my first year they ran several specials where you would get double miles, particularly at the grocery stores. With all the bonus miles and the purchases we made, plus a couple other things like hotel stays and a couple business trips we ended up with over 60,000 miles in about a year. That means we are eligible for 2 free tickets to the caribbean if we want.
Now the bad part. I am very detailed with my finances and I track everything. About once a week I would send a payment in (online banking)on the purchases I had just made and I would continue to charge. During the course of one month, I charged more than my credit limit. Even though at no point during the month were my outstanding expenditures over the limit they charged me an overlimit fee. To better explain lets say my limit is $500. I charged 200 a week for 4 weeks but I also send in a payment for $200 each week. My total charges for the month are $800 but my payments were also $800. Due to the timing of the payments I never went over on the outstanding balance.
I explained this to customer service and they finally credited me back the charge and told me that this was their policy not to consider those payments made during the billing cycle but they would remove the charge this time.
Once again, 2 FREE TICKETS, tells the whole story. Oh yeah, once my year was up I dropped the card so I would not have to pay the $85 annual fee.
