About six months after I became a personal Diners Club member about three years ago, my company decided to use Diners Club also for our corporate travel program. A great decision in my mind! Let me tell you why I like Diners Club so much:
* Diners is not a credit card, so you are expected to pay your bills in full. But you have two months to do so, without finance charges!
* Customer service is excellent. Whenever you need help, call the toll free number. In most cases, your call will be answered immediately BY A HUMAN! This is very different from most other charge or credit card companies. Another advantage: Diners Club employees seem to be well trained and very helpful. They treat you as a member, not as an account number.
* The Club Rewards programme is very generous. Depending on card type, you obtain two points per dollar spent. These points can be exchanged for merchandise, varying from TV's, cameras and furniture to sports gear. Or if you prefer, exchange your points into frequent flyer miles on all major US airlines and a number of important international airlines. Need somewhere to stay on your trips? Exchange your points for free nights at some hotel companies. And if you really can't find anything that you want, call Diners Club - if you have enough points, they will create your own individual award. Just tell them what you want!
Another point to consider: the normal exchange rates for Club Rewards points to frequent flyer miles is two points for one mile. But a number of times per year, Diners Club offers promotions that allow you to exchange one point into one mile. Effectively this means that you get two miles per dollar - more than you get on most frequent flyer programme credit cards! Airlines that have participated in this promotion include British Airways and Delta.
* The car rental insurance is considered primary insurance. Unlike other card insurance, Diners Club's insurance will pay for damages before asking your own car insurance to step in. This has saved me a lot of money since I no longer have to take collision damage waivers when renting a car.
One drawback: although all major hotels and many restaurants accept Diners Club here in the USA, I really would like more retail stores to welcome my card.
But for international travellers will be pleasantly surprised. Especially in Europe, the Diners Club card is accepted in many stores as well.
