Chase Freedom Card - The Better Rebate Program

Pros: Excellent Rebate Program

Cons: Not recommend for users that maintain balances

The Bottom Line: I may use this card even more than my Shell Mastercard so Chase made a great move in my "Epinion". Way to go Chase!

I have always been a fan of the Shell Mastercard from Chase. It had a top-notch
rebate program that gave a 5% rebate on all Shell gasoline purchases and a 1%
rebate on all other purchases. The rebate was automatically credited to the Shell
gasoline purchases on the next month's statement. I signed up for the Shell Mastercard
from Chase in 1998 after an extensive search and comparison of rebate credit cards.


The purpose of a program like this is to keep the customer loyal to purchasing
a certain product. In this case it was Shell gasoline. It worked because for the
last several years I would hunt for a Shell station when I needed gas. I would
even choose Shell if it was a few cents more per gallon than the competitors because
I knew that I would be able to subtract 5% from the price. This card was an excellent
way to keep me loyal to a particular gas station as well as a regular user of
the Mastercard that was issued by Chase.


Chase has recently discontinued the Shell Mastercard from Chase and has automatically
enrollment the Shell Mastercard cardholders in the "Chase Freedom" card
program. When they first notified me about the change, they didn't disclose any
details of the new program. They only said it would be better than the
Shell Mastercard program. I considered closing my account, but I decided to wait
and see what this "better" program was all about.


When I first evaluated the Shell Mastercard for my Epinion over 3 years ago, I
called it the "BEST rebate card" for gasoline rebates. Well Chase has
taken gasoline rebate to another level with the Chase Freedom card. I was pleasantly
surprised to see that the Chase Freedom Card still offers a 5% rebate on gasoline
purchase, only now I can claim this rebate at ANY gas station in the United
States! Plus I still get a 1% rebate from all other purchases. And even better,
the rebate is applied to any purchase on the next billing cycle. In the past I
have had to claim my rebates by making another Shell gasoline purchase, but not
anymore.

I may use this card even more than my Shell Mastercard so Chase made a
great move in my "Epinion". Way to go Chase!
