Rude Customer Service

Pros: great website, pay your bills online,send/receive money
Cons: horrible, rude customer service
The Bottom Line: The customer service is rude and unhelpful. They don't want you to close your account. They'll argue with you until you never want to bank with them again.

I have had two accounts with citibank over the years. Once when I was in college. I was happy with the service and closed my account because the rate was too high.
I opened another account just last year, wooed by a great interest rate. Never again. I was happy with the service and the rate until I lost my job and decided to close all my accounts to keep from over-spending.
Both of my other credit cards, Wachovia and Fleet were courteous and professional about closing my accounts. They were very helpful. But when I tried to close my account with Citibank, they kept asking why? My answer - I lost my job, I can't afford to have a credit card anymore. Then he started talking about the rate and how they can get me a better rate. I said no thanks, please just close my account. Then he came up with another reason for me to keep the card. No thanks, please close my account I said.
And this went on for a good five minutes, back and forth, him trying to convince me to keep my card. I finally told him I didn't want to discuss my personal finances with him and he couldn't understand why I was getting upset.
When he still wouldn't close my account, and persisted to tell me why I should keep my card, I finally asked to speak to his manager, who was conveniently on another call.
I told him that I would be happy if we could not have this dialouge any longer and I could just close my account, which he finally did, very rudely.
I will never bank with citibank again.
