I have had a rollercoaster ride with my Citibank Visa Charge Card. When I was in College, I received a Citibank card and used it for books, etc. while in school. I paid off the balance (or close to it) each month and sent in a payment in October of 1998. I thought that the balance had been paid in full, but had not realized that there was $3.68 in finance charges that accrued between the time the check was received. I did not receive any bills or phone calls from Citibank until February of 1999 when I was told that I was on a credit list and I was late on over $200!
This was all from "late" fees and finance charges. I was treated horribly by Citibank, and was told it was my responsibility. The customer service staff told me that I should have called them when I did not receive any bills. I was also told that I had to pay immediately or my credit would be damaged further. Finally, I was told that credit was "very important to someone in College and I should pay immediately to avoid future problems when buying a car or a house!" I was incensed that I was treated this way due to my age.
This went on until the Dept. of Consumer Credit agreed with me and that my University decided to not allow Citibank on the campus any longer. All of a sudden, I was treated wonderfully and received several calls from upper management.
Believe it or not, I reluctantly agreed to continue as a customer as they offered to take away all charges and lower my rate substantially. Since then, I have had no problems and have had great service.
Citibank offers an excellent finance rate and a low monthly payment minimum. Since my problems, they have been very helpful.
Unfortunately, the lower level staff really dropped the ball in my case and only by the excellence of the upper management did they save a customer. Also, other students had complained of the same problem, so beware!
