I like credit cards. I have always had at least three or four cards since I turned 18 four years ago. Citibank was one of the first cards that I received, possibly because of their aggressive marketing college marketing tactics. While the brand name is impressive (who doesn't know Citibank), very few other features are. Why?
1) High interest rates - College students, and the general public, can do much better than the 17.9% I'm currently paying. I just got a new Fleet card for 8.9%. I generally try not to keep a revolving balance on my card, but sometimes I have to. A few interest points can save one hundreds of dollars a year.
2) Lousy service - Three times I tried to change my address so that Citibank would stop sending me my bills at home, and start sending them to my school address. Changing an address really isn't that hard of a task. There is something secure in knowing that if you ask a company to do something, they should do it. Instead, I've had to put up with the hassle of bills arriving months after they were sent.
3) Beware of hidden service charges - For some odd reason, I was automatically signed up for payment protection. I feel like I was led into joining one of those buy 1 get 10 free CD clubs. You know the ones where they automatically, month after month for the rest of your life, send you a new CD from some band that you've never heard of, then bill $12.99 for the CD and $800 to ship the thing fifty miles. Well, all of a sudden I was caught by Citibank. They started charging me for payment protection. Why would a college student sign up for a service that will protect you if you get injured on the job? They wouldn't. That's why Citibank has to do it for you.
In sum, don't choose Citibank. The American Express Blue card is great, and has a low interest rate. I have that right now, and it has more than served it's purpose.
