Five years on the Chapter 13(bankruptcy) commonly called the Wage Earner Plan. The records stay on your credit file for 7 years.
We had no credit it went from AI to zilch just that fast. A few months before our plan would be paid off. We got an offer from Providian for a credit line of 1000.00. No security deposit required. My husband sent off for it. We had to start building out credit somewhere again.
There was no charge for getting the card other then paying the annual fee and a high percentage rate, which we expected. About 6 weeks later we got the card. This was in 1998. We were very vigilant about what we charged and paid before it was due and way over the minimum. 6 months later the credit line was raised 1000.00 more of course they charge a fee for this. The card has been raised 4 times since the first time. The interest is still high 23.99%. We get all the phone calls from them offering to raise our credit line enough to cover this program or that program we always say no. Then we are asked why we don't want this coverage. I have got to where I treat them like I do telemarketers thanks for calling NO Have a good day, and hang the phone up.
We have been using this card now almost 2 and a half years. We have never had a problem with customer service. The only time I had to call them was about canceling a program they had talked my husband into. They canceled it but it was hard for me to understand the customer service rep. Her English was not very good and I don't speak Spanish.
As soon as the bankruptcy is off our credit record next year. I will call and ask for our interest rate to be lowered. If they won't then I will transfer to another credit card with cheaper rates. This will be no problem at that time.
Right now our credit is the best. We have never been late with our payments they are always over the minimum payment.
We were able to finance a new truck for my husband at higher rates for sure but at least our credit is looking better and better.
