Before I start, I will grant the reader the fact I have not had much experience with a variety of banks. Bank of America continues to stick it to me, and I keep taking, for only one reason:
It is free for me.
I have the ATM-only account, the kind that charges you the second you walk in the door to talk to somebody. I do all of my deposits and withdrawals through the ATM; and as a result of my penchant for saving $3.00 a month I get nothing. No interest on checking, though that is pretty standard in big banks. I get charged $2.00 if I ever decide to talk to a teller.
To be fair, that is only if I talk to the teller about something I could do through the ATM, such as deposits, withdrawals and the like. Other things I do not get charged for.
I have a debit card on my account, which I use almost everywhere. As a result it is beginning to be well worn. It expires in March of 2002, so I somehow have to get a new one before then as I cannot use it Target, Blockbuster, Albertson's, and many other stores. There sensors on their computers are not sensitive enough to take worn cards. Now I would have gotten a new card earlier, but there are reasons for that.
Whenever I go to the bank to deposit money near where I work, there is never a customer service person there. This is the big bank in downtown Portland, Oregon, so one would think it would be a little necessary to have a customer service person, but apparently it is not. Now true, I could call and talk to someone on the phone, but invariably I am on the phone for at least 20 minutes, and I have other things I have to do.
I would especially like to get this out to college students. As it is the beginning of the school year, banks like Bank of America try to snag as many college students as possible on campuses across the nation. Warning: Pick another bank!
