Pros: Easy to navigate website, customer service, ATMs everywhere in NYC
Cons: High fees for some accounts
The Bottom Line: I recommend Citibank for people living in NYC. Many banks here charge high fees and are hard to get to. I have had an overall good experience with Citibank.

| Lysippe81's Full Review: Citibank |
I just moved to NYC from Texas last summer and I was forced to switch banks. I decided to open an account with Citibank.
The reasons were simple: 1. ATMs are everywhere 2. No minimum balance for my checking account
I had no trouble opening my account with Citibank. I was staying somewhere temporarily when I opened it and didn't know my way around the city at all. I opened the account basically online. They then sent me a package, including a pre-stamped envelope to return my proof of enrollment in school, opening deposit and signature verification. It was all very easy and I didn't have to wander around an unknown city. They even sent me 50 free checks! I do not pay any fees, they are waived because I am a student. There is also no minimum balance, all the other banks had one. I have unlimited withdrawals and unlimited check writing services.
I opened my account in July 2001. At first I was concerned because they held my deposits for 5 days!! However, that time period has diminished and I have direct deposit which makes it go through automatically. About one month ago they accidentally posted one of my deposits twice! I had never seen that much money in my account before! Unfortunately they realized and corrected the mistake promptly.
Since opening my account I have done most of my banking online. The online time I go to a branch is for the ATM. Their website is easy to use and I feel that it is secure. You can even download statements from months before. I have not tried their online bill paying as of yet, they advertise it as being free though.
I recommend Citibank for anyone who needs convenience. ATMs seem to be everywhere in Manhattan, and there are many in Brooklyn as well. Students benefit from using them because they get free unlimited checking while not having to maintain a certain balance.
