| ptiemann's Full Review: Citibank |
I believe that banking should be free since banks make profit off me when I keep my money in their low-interest checking/ savings accounts; therefore I decided to bank with my local Credit Union.
Also citibank does not have branches in many places here on the USA-West Coast. Citibank was attractive for me because they are international. I am a German citizen and still have financial responsibilities in Germany. Banking with citibank seemed to be a good choice because they have branches in all cities in Germany. But, as said before, not in California.
In Germany, citibank has a very bad reputation especially among bankers - citibank is very generous when it comes to give people credit but also shows no mercy when they drive their clients into bankruptcy.
I have a citibank Mastercard for the following reasons:
* although I was a foreigner with almost no credit history, they
gave me a decent 5-figure credit limit :-) see above - they really helped me establish strong credit.
* their website is very good.
I particularly like their latest new feature - automatic deduction of a fixed amount or the whole balance. I enabled this feature as soon as it was available and now my whole balance always is paid off automatically - no more check writing.
* my creditcard is tied to my frequent flier program (American Airlines) - you know every $ = 1 mile.
If I only had the time to do those trips I could get free now..
The downside is that their card is $50 - a little high for a penny-pincher like me. Another bad experience was when I had to make some customer-service calls. But that seems to be standard nowadays.
