I have been a customer of Commerce's since we moved down to Kansas City 7 years ago. What first attracted me to them was the fact that they offered free checking. No charges just to hold an account with them. POSITIVES 1. Like I already mentioned, there are no charges to hold an account. You also don't have to keep a minimum balance to receive that no fees benefit, unlike many other banks. You do have to apply for a debit card to get the free checking. But if you don't want it when you get it just destroy it. I do like to use it for gas purchases at the pump though (Just remember to subtract your debit purchases also.) 2. Another benefit is the vast amount of branches and ATM's all over the metro area. It seems that no matter where you go, you will find one within a couple of blocks. As long as you use their ATM's you aren't charged a fee. 3. I also love their automated phone system. I can check my account balance, find out what checks, deposits, etc have been posted, transfer money from one account to another, and many other things. It also gives me the option of talking to someone if I so choose to.
NEGATIVES 1. Like so many of the others, we have had problems with checks bouncing when we know the money is in the account. Even when we point out the mistake to them, they will not give us the $20 fee charged. This has only happened a couple of times though (but one is too many) 2. They must be very selective to giving loans. We applied for several, and were turned down. We do not have bad credit, and when we go to another bank they always give it to us right away!! 3. They charge you and so does the other bank if you use another ATM, just like many do now. Their online banking is also a fee if you want to use it.
Overall, because of the possibility of losing money, I would not really recommend this bank.
