I did not bank at Firstar by choice. I had banked at a small, locally owed bank that was unfortunately bought out by Star Bank, then by Firstar. The changes have been enormous.
First, gone is the friendly service. At the old bank, they were very helpful. Firstar, however, has instituted an "us against them mentality." I called on a Saturday morning just for information about my line of credit and ended up being snapped at and lectured to about the loan. When I asked to speak to someone else, I was told that everyone was gone and that no one could help me until Monday. Ok, then why was the phone even answered then?
I had my mother try to deposit money for me into my account. Mind you, DEPOSIT, not a withdraw. Before Firstar, this was not a difficult chore. Now it is. Furthermore, the bank imposes arbitrary rules. Half the time, if I deposit a large amount in my account, the teller can choose to put a hold on the check until it clears. I've asked about this rule, and it is all under the teller's discretion. Sometimes they do it to me, sometimes they don't. You just have to get in the line of the teller that you know won't put a hold on your money. That gives them way too much power, in my opinion.
Further, the fees at this bank have become astronomical. Ok, $27.00 for a non-sufficient fund is, granted, sort of high, but I can handle that. But charges of $5.00 a day on top of this for a low balance? I would think that $27.00 would be more than sufficient to cover whatever work has to be done.
Lastly, the account itself costs $10.00 a month. At my old bank, this included many services and benefits, including no fees for NSF. At Firstar, it is just an account. They look for anyway to charge you on top of this large fee.
I've complained and complained to Firstar about all of these problems, but again, it's an "us versus them mentality." I just can't wait for the day that I can afford to close this account and never deal with them again.
