I went to Star Bank (back then anyway) to open a student checking account a few years back. It's nice to have the account without all the high fees other banks (Bank One) like to charge. However, they have found hidden ways to make up for the low monthly fee.
For instance, they hold on to your cancelled checks for you. They make this sound like a great thing, and as far as I know, you do not have a choice in the matter. The problem is, if for some reason it turns out that you need your cancelled check for whatever reason, they make you pay to release it to you. Is that legal? I don't think a person should have to pay for what is rightfully theirs.
I opened a savings account there about the same time as the checking account for convenience sake. The interest rates were terrible, but that is typical for any bank (better to use credit unions I found out). When I went to close my savings account, they didn't seem too concerned to be losing my business. At least when I left Bank One they seemed a little worried.
At our local branch of Firstar, the ATM is situated so that you have to get out of your car to walk up to the machine and get your money. There are bushes located around the machine, and not a whole lot of light. Call me paranoid, but I really do not like to walk up to an ATM at night and risk someone hiding behind the bushes waiting for me, to say nothing of the people in line behind me who can watch me type in my PIN. I would feel much safer with a drive up ATM. I wonder if they could be bothered with a customer's suggestion?
Speaking of customer (service that is), their's is usually pretty terrible. You can call their number and reach an actual person, but is it worth it to try to talk to them? Everytime I've called them, they've twisted my problem around to be all my fault for whatever reason. This is not how you treat customers. I wonder if they really want to keep us?
