The purpose of this review is to warn prospective and current Fleet credit card customers of the bad customer service and escalating interest rates at Fleet, and to provide them with a course of action.
I have a credit card with Fleet that I use to finance my business, and recently the rate escalated to 23-25%. After several phone requests, A. Holmes-Moody wrote me a letter stating that the reason for the escalation was due to "Info. on a serious delinquency, derogatory public record, or collection…” but did not name the Credit Reporting Agency that provided this information. Subsequent letters and faxes went unanswered, and during a recent phone call (12.27.99) Fleet changed its story, saying I had been late several times with my payments (although my credit report from Experian contradicts this). My latest call was met with an incredibly rude response from an agent in Rhode Island who said “nobody cares…you have no rights.”
In fact, we as credit consumers do have few rights, but one I strongly urge those dissatisfied with Fleet (or any other Credit Card company that abuses its obligations to its customers) is to file a complaint with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. The address follows. Although this may seem useless, the major plus is that ALL complaints must be recorded (no matter how resolved) and are available under the Freedom of Information Act. In a future installment of this review, I hope to report on the status of my inquiry about complaints against Fleet vs other Banks.

Include copies of your correspondence with Fleet and a letter outlining the nature of the problem. You must also provide authority to the Comptroller’s office to look into the matter, and of course include your account number and Fleet’s address, etc.
Perhaps if Fleet receives a few dozen complaints, they will attempt to improve their customer service? In the meantime, I strongly urge all credit card users to avoid Fleet.
