| mandymcclelland's Full Review: SunTrust Bank |
I recently moved to Northern Virginia and opened an account at Crestar Bank (merged with SunTrust in 1998). My roommate recommended Crestar to me because of the low $3 monthly charge on a self-service account and the large number of ATM's in the area. While this bank seemed good for a recent graduate, I found numerous hidden charges and inconveniences.
First of all, the hours of the bank are from 9am-2pm Monday through Friday. Some branches do have extended hours or are open on Saturdays, but you have to seek them out. For those of us that work, this is a little hard to deal with. I also found that my account representative was never available to speak with when I did call during the day. Often she had "stepped away from her desk" or was "out to lunch" and was not prompt in returning my calls. These are minor annoyances that most people could deal with.
My main problem was that I had recently moved to the area and needed to be able to access my account in order to get my affairs settled. I chose a self service account...meaning that I would use ATM's for all my banking. My ATM card was supposed to arrive in 3-5 business days. After 7 business days, I called back and was told that I would have to cancel the card that was in the mail. This meant that I had to wait another 3-5 business days for the new card to arrive. Now usually, I would just attribute this to random error, but it happened again when I applied for a Checkcard. A small side point...my current ATM card was cancelled before I received my Checkcard and was again left without my primary access to my account.
The ATM debit card and Checkcard receive charges when I use them at the grocery store. I've used other banks and this has not happened. I also have to pay a $2.00 service charge every time I have to go into a branch and make a transaction...even when it is their fault for not getting me my card. Finally, I was not able to leave the bank with my temporary checks the day I opened my account. They had to mail it to me through their corporate mail to verify my address. I thought this was odd, since my previous bank had let me walk out the door with the temporary checks.
So, here is a quick summary. On the surface, the bank is enticing and offers a low cost account. I would also like to add that their online account access is very easy to use and helpful. You can also start an account online, if you have an account at another bank. However, the service is incredibly bad and left me very frustrated. I can't wait until I get married in 10 months and change banks.
