Pros: Branches inside stores open 7 days, online banking, no long waits to see a banker.
Cons: Locations only in Midwest and West so far.
The Bottom Line: If there's a U.S. Bank branch near you, give them a try. You may be pleasantly surprised.

| dennpat's Full Review: U.S. Bancorp |
I have only been with U.S. Bank for three months, but feel that I've experienced enough of their service to write a review. Before ending my long association with WaMu (previously Home Savings of America), I began researching various banks. I knew I didn't want to go with the mega-banks like Bank of America and Wells Fargo, nor did I want to go with a really small community bank, but something in-between. I could remember seeing TV commercials for U.S. Bank and their 5-star service guarantee a few years ago, when they started popping up in my area. I also remembered one of my sisters and her husband banking with U.S. Bank and being happy with them. My local branch is located inside of a Vons grocery store. I went over there one Saturday morning and the branch manager helped me open checking and savings accounts. A week later, I received a box of checks (but with no checkbook cover). The following day I received the debit/ATM card, and the PIN the day after. I passed by the branch on my way home from work that same week to let them know I didn't get a checkbook cover, so they ordered one for me at no charge, which I received a few days later. I was able to get my paycheck direct deposit switched over with no problem. The online banking is very user-friendly and is helpful for checking account balances, making funds transfers, ordering checks, sending secure messages to customer service, etc. It also lists pending transactions, which I find useful. I like the fact that the U.S. Bank branch offices in my area are rarely very busy, plus my branch inside the Vons store has two ATMs INSIDE the building, which I feel are safer, especially at night. My local Walgreens store, which is very close to my home, even has a U.S. Bank ATM inside, but it only dispenses cash and does not take deposits. Also, the branches inside of stores like Vons are open seven days a week. The standalone branches are open all day Monday-Friday and half a day on Saturdays. The bank statements so far have been accurate and I've been able to balance my checkbook to the penny! :-) About the only negative experience I've had thus far was when I signed up a family member to be a joint account holder and she didn't get her debit card within the time frame promised (they said it was supposed to be a week). When the card didn't arrive, I first called the main customer service number to try to straighten the matter out. The phone banker couldn't resolve the issue on her end and referred me to my local branch. I passed by there on my way home from work one day later in the week and explained the situation to the co-manager. He looked it up on their computer and said the card was ordered almost two weeks prior, and couldn't understand why I never received it. He said he'd cancel that card and order a new one, which, once again, should arrive in a week. Fortunately, a week later, the debit card for my joint account holder arrived. However, I was unable to activate it online, so I had to make another call to the main customer service number. This time, they needed to speak with my family member, which they did. She was even able to change the PIN right there over the phone. That was over a month ago. So far, no other problems have cropped up.
Update 1/18/09: I still have my U.S. Bank account but have also opened an account at Kinecta Federal Credit Union. See separate review on Kinecta Federal Credit Union.
