| taifeng's Full Review: Wachovia |
Wachovia is just another bank that is too big to care about individuals. While they gobble small town banks to be "your neighbor" they grow larger and really don't suit the individual checking account holders at all.
My problems started in '97 when I had to stop payment on a mail order purchase. I paid the paid $24 for this and all seemed well until my account came up short the purchase amount a few months later. The check was never seen. Several weeks of "research" revealed that my account had been drafted. Of course this requires my authorization, which I guess Wachovia decided was not necessary. I put this in to dispute and was told by the branch manager that I could fill out the legal forms and wait out the process to get my money back. I could not believe that I was expected to tie my money up for a draft that they should not have allowed. The draft paperwork was found without my signature. I had to find a retired executive and get him to pull strings before I was refunded my money.
As soon as my money was returned, 6 months later by the way, I closed my accounts and moved to a local small town 5 branch bank. Life was great. They knew my name without having to read my account like Wachovia has to do. The main branch was in town. Guess what. Two years later Wachovia bought them out.
I am already having trouble again. I was recently charged a $5 fee for an in-branch transaction. It seems that I am only allowed two transactions inside a branch per month for the type of account I have. I was told that the fee was "encouragement" for me to use the deposit boxes and ATMs and that my account is only allowed 2 times per month to transact with "an actual human being" I replied that the "encouragement" worked. I then stated that I am now "encouraged" to bank elsewhere. I said that I don't feel comfortable leaving deposits outside and receiving no receipt. She didn't seem to care at all. It would not seem so strange to be charged this type of fee except that the only in-branch transactions I ever have are deposits. So they are discouraging me from putting money in to their bank.
This bank does not care about "the little guy" at all. Fees are all this place cares about. I know banks have to make money, but to discourage me from making deposits that they can then make money on is just stupid. If you can join a credit union somehow I encourage you to do it.
