I am enraged today. Even the fact that I have closed my BillPoint account does not provide me any reason to be less angry.
Have you ever heard of chargebacks? These are the eBay sellers’ worst nightmares, if they use BillPoint that is.
I have been selling stuff on eBay for a while and thought it would be a good idea to add an option for my buyer to check out using eBay’s checkout system, which uses BillPoint. The use of BillPoint makes the purchase process much easier for the buyer – there is no need to open an account with PayPal or send a money order by mail and wait till it gets to the seller.
I also have a PayPal account and when I got an email from PayPal describing, among other its advantages over BillPoint, the fact that PayPal accounts have chargeback protection that BillPoint accounts don’t, I figured there is no reason for me to worry even if BillPoint doesn’t have the chargeback protection.
Then it happened. Some scumbag bought an item from me with a stolen credit card. Two months later, the chargeback was initiated and the BillPoint’s chargeback team let me know that, “Billpoint takes measures to help prevent fraud and chargebacks, but the seller is ultimately responsible for each credit card transaction transaction they accept.”
In other words, if somebody uses a stolen credit card or disputes a transaction, and you have already sent the buyer the product you are selling, you will loose both the product and the money the seller “paid” you.
Although the BillPoint was somewhat convenient, it is also not the best payment service to use in terms of ease of use and fees.
Navigational Nightmare
In terms of ease of use, PayPal is much better organized and has better functionality. Transactions in BillPopint are scattered all over the place and it is difficult to figure out what they are charging you for and where...
It is also difficult to figure out how to get to the screen that shows a certain fee for a transaction. There is no screen to see all transactions the way PayPal allows you to – you have to go to different places for “Deposits”, “Purchases”, “Sales History”, etc.
Weird Fee Structure
PayPal also does not charge a fee for depositing money in your bank account the way BillPoint does. BillPoint charges you for virtually any activity and the fees for any given transaction are difficult to find since they are scattered all over the place.
Conclusion
I closed my BillPoint account today and recommend anybody who thinks about using BillPoint as a seller to think twice.
