Attention all college students and other poor folks -
I recently began using Suretrade.com as an online broker and have had excellent luck with it. First and foremost, its the cheapest game in town. Trades are only $7.95 and while other companies such as Ameritrade have low trade prices, they all require a minimum balance of usually at least $1000. Sometimes they run specials, but you need MAINTAIN that low balance, usually $500. Suretrade has no minimum balance, so you could open an account with as little as $10. This is ideal for those of us who just want to dabble in the market and get our feet wet. Suretrade is also a very comprehensive sight, designed for all investors from us first timers, right up to the guys with the big guns. There is a wealth of online research available and easy to understand explanations of everything involved. Help is also readily accessible, either via email, online chat or telephone. The only downside that I have seen so far is the fact that balances are not accurate (and often way off) in the late night hours - this is because their computers are recalculating your balances based on the days activities. Its all better in the morning, though. I've had very good luck with the site and am thoroughly enjoying it. Its cheap, secure, very interesting and most of all easy to use. I highly recommend it.
