Well here I go again, testing sites, to see what they have to offer and how they treat their customers. Compubank was the site I picked, through Cybergold. I have never had an internet bank account before, and they seem to offer their customers a lot of advantages such as:
The Wall St. Journal Magazine of Personal Business,
SmartMoney, rates CompuBank the Number One Online Bank.
FREE basic checking accounts
FREE savings accounts
FREE bill payment
FREE domestic wire transfers
FREE ATM Network and 4 surcharge reimbursements
($1.50/per) a month
FREE ClickMiles, redeemable for Frequent Flyer Miles and lots of great items
FREE online Check Images and Monthly Statements
Well I think the process you have to go through, just to get to your account is a lot of paperwork. Seems like there is a lot more than if you went to a bank and applied for an account. They ask you to print out a signature card and sign it and mail it to them for their file. Your account is not active until you do so.
You can mail in the initial deposit of $100.00, but make sure that the check is made out to you. They do not take cash, cashier's checks or money orders for your first deposit, which I thought was bizarre, because what if you don't have a bank account, and that was the only way you could get money into the bank? They do take debit cards for the initial deposit, but only if you do it when you first sign up. You cannot go back into the system until (1) they have your signature card AND (2) they have your initial deposit. If you still want to give them the initial deposit by credit card, you must fax it to them.
And reading previous reviews, Cybergold does offer you $30.00 for signing up through Compubank, but they are making $40.00 on the refer a friend program. So you will not get your money until they get theirs. So if you signed up for Compubank on October 1, 2000, Cybergold will not pay you until the first of November. Also, beware, they state you will get an extra $20.00 from Compubank, that program has expired. I was informed by Compubank that all their programs ended on September 30, 2000. The only thing that they will pay you for is Circle of Friends, which is $40.00.
Also, all of your checks have to be mailed to Compubank, or you may have a direct deposit set up. You have to be very disciplined and budget conscious and just expect to do all your mailings on a certain day of the week.
All in all, I believe Compubank is a very good bank. They are very friendly when you call them. I have found a delay of a day or two if you email them through your account. I also tried to wire money, because it is free, but you have to have a Wire Transfer Agreement on file with them, so make sure you fill that out. But I believe their customer service is excellent, and that is what I look for when I do my internet searching!
Good luck and happy banking!
