I have been banking online for about 5 years and have had positive experiences with OTHER banks. So if figured, "Why not try NetBank?" Since there is no minimum, I could close my other high interest checking account and use the $500 that was just sitting in my account.
I should've stopped at the application page
The experience with the application page for opening an account was bad. After completing a couple of pages, it would sometimes bring me back to a previous page. Then I would have to close my browser, reopen a new browser window and try again. I should've stopped at this point, but I wanted to give NetBank a chance.
The next problem with Netbank is the extremely long lag time for external transfers to show up in the account. If you put a transfer request in on a Friday, it will show up the following Friday. This is an ETERNITY in banking days. I figured, as long as its consistent I can work around this problem.
I also had a problem linking my Bank of America account because NetBank's webpage has too many checking routines in its code. Bank of America only uses the last four digits of your account on its website, but when you try to link the account from NetBank's website, you can't type in the full 12 digit account number because it says it doesn't match (the 4 digit account number from Bank of America's site)
The NEXT problem I had was that I couldn't transfer funds from my external account because NetBank's webpage had old information. It showed that my external account had only $200 for a when I wanted to transfer over $450. The webpage was comparing these values and would not let me transfer the money. I found that ridiculous!
Another Problem
So the step I did was to try and update the balance of my external account. That was IMPOSSIBLE. I got another error message telling me that my account was locked.
And yet another problem..
Of course, I called their customer service line (or should I say no-customer service line). I was put on hold 3 times because the rep had to check on a few things. In the end, I was told that a technician would check into it and I would receive a response by Bank Mail in 5 days! That is totally UNACCEPTABLE! I deposit my money and use their service,to what? Have my money sit there and twiddle my thumbs? I'm sorry. I forgot. I wasn't able to use their service.
Enough was enough. I opened my account on 2/10/04 and closed it 3/10/04. Within that time period I had too many problems with this bank and did not want to deal with the non-service anymore. I wrote myself a check to withdraw my money and left a $25 balance for the "closing the account within 6 months" fee. I wanted to leave $0 balance, but I decided it was not worth the time and hassle for them to bill me $25 and possibly put me on collection for not paying it. After my check cleared, I faxed in my request to close my account and asked them to WAIVE the $25 closing fee because of my dissatisfaction with their service. Suprisingly they closed my account that same day! That was a delight! Of course they charged me the $25 fee, and they have every right to under law because it is spelled out in their fee schedule.
Recap
Tried NetBank. Hated it! In the end it cost me $25 out of my own pocket.
Suggestion.. If you don't have a NetBank account, then DON'T SIGN UP! If you do have a NetBAnk account, close it and use FirstIB instead! They are lightyears ahead of Netbank in terms of service!
