| banker74's Full Review: AIG - American International Group - Auto |
Prior to joining AIG I had a good policy w/ a local agent through Mercury insurance. Unfortunately for me, AIG, through my Chase card, offered a great policy. I had been paying about $1,300/year for my 2001.5 Audi A4 (comp & collision) and my 64 1/2 Convertible mustang. AIG cam in w/ a rate of $1,060. Against the warnings of my agent (he said 'Give me a call when they jack up your rates' I went with AIG. I live in California and am 28.
Since I have had no claims I can't comment on their service from that standpoint, but based on what I've seen I'd guess it's mediocre.
Fast forward 6 months. I get my premium in the mail and it's $660 for the next six months. I think to myself there must be something wrong. I call AIG and they say 'Because there have been so many accidents in your state and claims filed we needed to raise the rates'. I was very upset about this, however since I didn't want to take the time to shop for new auto insurance I figured I wouldn't do anything.
Fast forward another 6 months - yesterday. I come home and find my renewal in the mail. I open it - and voila - $706 for the next six months. That's over a 30% increase in a year. Keep in mind I have had NO accidents, NO tickets, No claims, and NOTHING else to warrant a rate hike. I call, and get the same bogus spiel about all the accidents, need to raise rates, etc.....
Well I've done an informal poll of friends and coworkers (all here in California), and this hasn't happened to anybody else. I guess AIG must be targeting people w/ ultra-poor driving records or insuring every bad driver on the road.
It comes down to this. If you have a good policy, fairly priced, with a good agent, KEEP it. Or, at a minimum, if you need/want a cheaper price, do NOT go to AIG. While they might be cheap at the outset, they'll jack it up VERY soon. If you don't believe me read some other reviews or do a GOOGLE search and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Good luck!
