| JustCathy's Full Review: AIG - American International Group - Auto |
My husband and I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for 9 years. You want to talk about pricey insurance, just ask anyone who lives in the West Coast - particularly the Bay Area! Our insurance company at the time we originally moved to California in 1987, was State Farm Imagine my shock after shortly moving to California and our rates tripled. The insurance agent of course explained this to us rather well. Insurance rates are based on the area in which you live - the incidence of accidents and comprehensive claims. This sure does sound logical, but when you get the bill - let me tell you, logic goes out the window and panic sets in!
Every three months when the premiums were due, I would just shake as I wrote out that check. We kept looking into other companies for more affordable automobile insurance, but we were beginning to become resigned to the fact that we would be paying outlandish rates for coverage. We figured this was one of the prices we had to pay for living in Northern California.
It was in June of 1996, I remember this exactly, because we were getting ready for a trip to Europe. I received information in the mail about AIG. I had left it sitting around on the kitchen table for a few days, getting ready to toss it out, when I decided, oh what the heck, let's give these folks a call. I mean, really, what harm could it do?
I was shocked to find out that I would be able to get the identical coverage I had with State Farm for over a nine hundred dollars less per year! Of course, I was skeptical, but after my husband and I talked it over, we figured that if it didn't work out - i.e., they would triple our rates within the year, we could always go back to State Farm.
Well, I'm here to tell you, it's been four years since we first purchased insurance with AIG. In 1999, we moved to Minnesota, and we had absolutely no problem in moving our coverage with us from AIG - of course, at a reduced rate because we are now living in a more "insurance friendly" environment.
The true test of our insurance coverage with AIG came in April of 1999, shortly after moving to Minnesota. Both of our cars were vandalized, windows shattered and the CD players stolen. When I called AIG, I had to admit, I was a bit concerned that I would get the run-around. Nothing could have been further from the truth. The claim agent was helpful and very polite. He asked me to get estimates of repair and receipts for the cost of the CD players. After mailing the estimates of repair, receipts for the players, and the police report, I had a check in my hands within a few days! It was as simple as that. My insurance rates never increased as a result of this claim - an experience I remember having a long time ago with another insurance company that shall remain nameless!
You can learn more about AIG and get a free online quote when you check out their website at http://www.aig.com/welcometoaig.html. Here's hoping that you get as great a deal on automobile insurance as I have!
I suppose you could choose another insurance company and pay hundreds of dollars more, but I am not sure why you would want too!
