Amica Over Values Your Home and has Unrealistic Inspection Requirements

Written: Nov 9, 2009 (Updated Nov 9, 2009)

Pros:The hassle outweighs any benefits.
Cons:Ridiculous 3rd party inspections.
Calculator way overvalues homes -- this makes deductibles and premiums higher.
The Bottom Line: I will NEVER use Amica for my home insurance -- they over value your home to inflate your premiums.

First of all, we just built our home acting as our own general contractor.  WE purchased ALL the materials ourselves, and hired all the subs.  Our house cost 300,000 to build -- this does not include the outside structures such as the patios and retaining wall.  Amica valued the replacement cost of our home at 450,000.

Me: Why is it so much higher than my actual cost?
Amica:  Costs to build a house have sky rocketed.
Me:  I just finished building my house this year.
Amica:  I can't help you, it always costs more.
Me:  So housing costs have gone up 150% in the last 6 months?
Amica:  That's what we show on our calculator.

Anyway, Amica was still slightly lower than my current company, so I was going to persue it a bit further.  Then they tell me since I have 2 German Shepherds, they want to send a 3rd party inspector out to 'meet' my dogs.

Me:  Meet my dogs -- I don't let strangers around my dogs.
Amica:  We have to determine if they are aggressive.
Me:  I own dogs for protection, if you break in, I hope they bite you.
Amica:  A 3rd party inspector understands that, they won't actually touch your dogs.

OK, this is getting ridiculous.  Then we get to the guns.

Amica:  How many guns do you own.
Me:  Not sure, several.  They are like shoes, you never know exactly how many you currently own.
Amica:  Are they locked up at all times?
Me:  No, we don't have children, nor are children in our home -- not to mention, if someone breaks in, how am I going to shoot them if my gun is locked up?
Amica:  We don't insure people who don't lock up their guns.
Me:  So if someone breaks in and harms me, I can sue you b/c it's your fault I couldn't get to my gun.
Amica:  Ummmm...

Needless to say, we will not be using Amica.  Are they insane?  I also checked with Allstate, Safeco, Travelers, Farmers, and State Farm for home insurance.  None of those companies wanted to meet my dogs, wanted me to lock up my guns, or told me it would cost 450K to rebuild a house that cost 300K to build this year.
