The concept of insuring your livestock is sound--like any other animal, horses are subject to accidents and illness. Breeding or training horses is a gamble that those of us who love horses are willing to take, but the risks involved can be costly. In todays "Lets Sue Everyone" world it is dangerous and down right stupid not to have some type of insurance to protect yourself. Many livestock owners are not aware of the fact that in most states, if your animal gets out of its pasture and causes an auto accident--YOU CAN BE HELD LIABLE. Or if someone is riding on your property, even if they are trespassing, and gets injured--YOU CAN BE HELD LIABLE.

The major complaint I have with insuring my animals is that I can only insure them for what I paid for them--not their current value. We all know that a young, untried animal is not as valuable as a mature, proven one. But as the value increases, many of us smaller breeders are left behind because we cannot afford the cost of the insurance. In many cases it is better for us to take a loss on our taxes than to pay out the cost of the premiums.

Health insurance on horses is an entirely different matter and is a GREAT idea. If you have ever had an animal that required surgery, you know what I mean---the cost can be astronomical. And if you stay in the industry long enough you will have a sick or injured animal.

Overall I give Equine Insurance Specialists a top notch rating. They have paid off on claims to many people in the industry that I know without hassles and are friendly and helpful on the phone. It is difficult to find insurance on horses and for farmowners that provides GOOD coverage, this one does.
