Pros: Cordial agents, decently affordable insurance.
Cons: Billing service will cancel your policy if you pay late twice within 12 months
I was a Farmer's Auto Insurance customer from the day I started driving at age 15. I was on my parents' policy until I got my own vehicle at age 16 and began paying my own insurance. I am now 25. I've never had an accident or a ticket. But I have DROPPED Farmer's forever, and here is why.
My complaint about Farmers is with their billing company, "Prematic Services Corporation." Prematic apparently has a leg up on Farmers, and is able to cancel Farmers policies, I think Farmers would be more considerate. After being a Farmers client - with no accidents and not even a ticket - for 9 years, my insurance was cancelled. Why? Because I dared to be "late" on my payment twice in a year's time!
I was set up to pay monthly for my insurance. Everything was great. I'm a good driver. I've been driving 10 years, never had a wreck, or even a speeding ticket. Most insurers would be proud to have me as a driver. Not Farmers via Prematic.
I was legitimately late on my payment back in January of 2004. I had just moved to a new place, I didn't get the bill until it went through the Postal Service forwarding, it got to me after the due date, and so I wound up paying it late. I don't deny it, I paid that bill late, I don't think it was really my fault because of the Post Office forwarding, but it was late regardless.
Fast forward 8 months. I decide to redeem my vacation time from work that I've accumulated. In September 2004 I took a week off and had some fun in Destin, FL. Apparently I planned my vacation at the worst possible time as far as Prematic Service Corporation was concerned! When I got home I had two letters from them.
One was my normal insurance bill. The other one was a notice saying, because you've been late twice in a 12 month period, we can no longer offer to process your monthly insurance payments and oh by the way, we cancelled your policy!!
What a crock. For one thing, I was only out of town a week, they cancelled my policy over one week's time. Worst case scenario, their bill showed up the day I left, by the time I got back a week later, their cancellation notice was there, it takes a day or two for the mail to go through, so I figure they considered my payment "late" 5 days after I got the bill!
I don't blame Farmer's as much as I blame Prematic Service Corporation. Prematic is a bunch of crooks. Too bad Farmers uses them. I went elsewhere and to be honest I'm glad all of this happened. I won't mention the competitor but it's saving me quite a bit.
