They Do Not Value Their Customers

Written: Feb 26 '00
Pros:Discount's
Cons:A customer is of no real value to them, besides making a profit

My experience with State Farm it not the best either.

Over 15 years ago my husband and I moved out west from Wisconsin. On the drive out traveling through the state of Montana we were involved in a car accident. We reported the accident along with all the required information needed. I had a neck injury and as each day passed it was getting worse. When we finally made it to our destination trying to get an approval for medical was ridiculous, just a run around. In the mean time I went to a chiropractor to see if I could get something done for the pain. Seems State Farm decided they were not going to pay for anymore treatments and we were on our own. They did not even try to fight the other party involved, or act like they cared too. They did nothing to help.

Another incident with them happened when we tried to switch to another agent. Seems we had to prove we had been with the company for at least 3 years. Oh, no problem we can do that. Just punch our name up on your computer with our account number. Surprise, surprise, surprise! Even though we had been with them for years there is not record of us. That is really messed up. Did the local agents we were dealing with even try to help? NO, it was up to us to prove we had been with the insurance company for 3 years. Man, what a headache. Finally had to wright to the corporate office with a complaint to get that mess cleared up.

The next problem concerned reporting our sons to the insurance company when they had a driver's license issued to them. State Farm required we add them to our policy regardless if they were driving our vehicle or not. We didn't think that was fair, why should we have to pay for them on our insurance even if we do not allow them to drive our vehicle? We were outraged at how much our insurance would go up, so we insured our sons through another company.

Then we had to deal with the issue of no drivers under the age of 25 being covered on our insurance. One of our sons needed to use our vehicle for work while his was being worked on. Our sons insurance company said he is covered to drive our vehicle. With this information I went to our State Farm office to inquire why if my son had full coverage why he could not use our vehicle? If any thing happened our sons insurance covers our vehicle. One agent told me, "no were not covered and the other said we were". Again I had to contact the corporate office to solve this problem. They even sent a statement as i requested for proof to show to our agent that we were covered.

Awhile back State Farm would insure you free for a month if you added a vehicle to your existing policy. The first time was ok, the second time we were cheated out of it.

The plus side of adding vehicles you get up to a 10% discount. I should also add here that the longer you're with the company the cheaper your rates get if you're not in any accidents. They also have an additional tow rate if you break down. Don't get your vehicle towed because the battery went dead. I was told if we ever did that, our insurance would be dropped.

In 1996 our 23-year old son was killed in an automobile accident. The lady that hit him had State Farm insurance. Our son at the time had moved back in with us to help out with our finances. The ladies agent from State Farm started calling us asking questions us a variety of questions about our son. I must add that the first time he called he did say he was sorry for our loss. No person is really in any frame of mind to be drilled with questions that soon. Our son was killed the evening before Thanksgiving so we had that time in-between before the agent started calling us. After that the phone calls started rolling in. Wanting the information if our son had insurance and the address he was living at seemed reasonable, which I answered. More telephone calls were made to us, now the agent wants to know if I am employed where does my husband work, do we have insurance, if so do we rent or own our home"? I answered some of the questions. Being in the frame of mind of a parent whose son was alive just days before and now dead, this was getting to overwhelm me. I told that agent "I did not see what all the questioning is about". The agent already had the immediate answers he needed. Seems State Farm was trying to find a loophole to hold us partially responsible for the accident. Can you believe that? It was a good thing that we did not carry our son on our State Farm policy or there could have had some grounds to come after us for her added expenses. I know your wondering how this could be. It is so hard to understand and much harder to even explain. I can only say that if someone lives with you and uses your address it has a way of coming back on you. After the agent kept calling and calling for his client I told him that I refused to answer any more questions and his client needs to hire an attorney to pursue us further. It did not stop there he continued to call and I finally lost my temper and told him that I was not pleased with him or his client in a few choice words. My son hit a patch of water in the highway that caused him to loose control. Witness's said all the vehicles around him avoided being hit and that my son managed to get the car under control on the side of the highway and then that lady hit him. With people coming to me and telling me what they saw it was making me upset that State Farm was trying to help the client collect more money. It really upset me to find out that all others managed to avoid a collision (please do not misunderstand, I am thankful none of them were hurt or killed) and this lady by her own admission said she say absolutely nothing before she hit my sons car. How could that be? The highway was full of drivers swerving to avoid a collision. My sons car had spun around 2 or 3 times down the center of a 4 lane highway crossing over into the on-coming traffic and she say nothing? All others avoided it that were ahead of her and seen what was happening. She had more room in front of her then the other drivers. My son had almost gotten his car under control; he was half in the lane and on the side of the road facing in the right direction. This lady hit his car with such impact that he was crushed to death. If she were paying the slightest bit of attention she would have at least tried to avoid the collision; she would have seen the other drivers avoiding something. It just appalled me that State Farm would proceed to help this lady pursue further action to collect under these circumstances. Not because my son is dead, because of her own admission, she saw nothing and wasn't paying attention.

If your considering State Farm Insurance this information might help you make a choice.

As for quoting rates I did not. It is impossible to give a good range price. We all know it depends on the age, you're driving record, what type of insurance, the deductible, and the type of car your driving.

Basically this is an opinion on the customer service the company offers. It gives a reader some idea of how they may or may not be treated. Every situation is different.

My advice is to join at your own risk; no two experiences are the same.

Do I recommend State Farm to my friends? No

Is State Farm a good neighbor? No, not with the experience I have had.
