I've had insurance with State Farm since I was 15 years old. I have never had a wreck, have no tickets on my record. I did have hail damage in 2002.
My husband & I got a homeowner's policy on our first home in 2001. We made no claims until a tornado hit our area. We all sustained damages and all of my neighbors (who weren't with State Farm) received new roofs. While my neighbor was getting a new roof, his contractor said that our roof was more heavily damaged than our neighbor's roof. We called State Farm & were told we had to file a claim to arrange an adjuster to come out TO SEE IF WE WERE ELIGIBLE for a new roof.
We did just that. However, State Farm's adjuster said there was nothing wrong with our roof & denied our claim. AND then our insurance rates went up. WHY? Because we FILED a claim. State Farm said it didn't matter the claim wasn't paid. We had the audacity to file.
Still, we stayed with them. Last week, my husband was weed-eating the lawn and a random rock flew out & shattered our glass sliding door. We have called the glass company & they said there is no way to fix it -- The whole door will have to be replaced.
We have a $500 deductible. The bill (for installation plus the door) will come to around $900. Our State Farm agent has told us NOT to file a claim because that will raise our rates $180 per year for three years. So the fact that State Farm has to pay out $400 on an insurance claim is going to cost us $540. That's a nice return on State Farm's $400 investment.
We will be looking for another insurance company. Hopefully one that doesn't profit when the inevitible DOES happen.
