| terrid's Full Review: Travelers - Home |
Over the years since we bought this house in 1992, we have had several insurance companies. For the last few years and up to 1 Jan of this year, our insurance company has been Travelers.
I'll be honest. The insurance company that we had prior to Travelers was bad. Our house burnt down and our headaches started. So, when our claim (which ended up being several) was finally done, we (and they) decided that we needed a new company. We insured our vehicles with Geico and gave them a call. They don't do home insurance but send their customers to Travelers.
After answering several questions and explaining why we had several claims within the past year, we were now insured with Travelers. Our yearly payments were about what everyone else had quoted us. Our payment to the company comes out of our house escrow account which makes me happy. And for several years, we have had a wonderful relationship.
This year, everything changed. I ended up having to file a claim. It wasn't a huge claim but it was several thousand dollars and involved a trip to the house. This in and of itself is no big deal.
The claim was a fallen tree and a destroyed shed. Both were easily identified and the claim process started. Within a couple of weeks, we received a check for what we thought was a correct amount for the damage. Shortly, we received a second check as the adjuster didn't adjust the cost of the shed correctly. Still everything was going fine.
Then, came the letter. The letter informing us that we had things to correct if we were going to keep them as our company.
Correction #1) Trim the trees around the house. Okay, no big deal. We haven't had time to do it lately and it needs to be done anyway.
Correction #2) Clean up the mess that was in the shed when it was destroyed. Well, yeah!!! I guess so though without a shed I'm not sure where it's going yet. I'm not buying a new shed until the stupid contractor building behind my property is finished as he likes to knock down trees and have his streets drain into our backyards. The mess is still being worked on but it is being worked on.
Correction #3) Remove the trampoline. Excuse me? But no. No, I will not remove the trampoline. It has been in the yard for quite a while without problem. It is in a fenced yard. It has safety netting. Children do not play on it unsupervised. Besides, my grandkids enjoy it.
Travelers went just a little too far. That trampoline is much safer than the inground swimming pool we use to have. That trampoline is much safer than the dirt jumps my youngest use to build in the backyard.
So, with heavy heart, we went looking for a new insurance company. We found one without too much problem. I pay about what I did for Travelers. They have no problem with my trampoline. Geico's not too happy though because when we decided to not comply with Travelers and leave, we took all our other policies too.
