USAA- pretty cool for an insurance company

Written: Jan 29 '00
Pros:They pay up.
Cons:It is car insurance! CAR INSURANCE IS AWFUL!! It is betting you will not crash, and your reward, should you not crash, is paying the company.

After at least 12 speeding tickets, one failure to stop at a stop sign, one running a red light, One passing on the right, failure to use turn signal, one illegal left turn, One expired inspection sticker, and one citation for failure to wear safety belt, I am still insured by my very first insurance company!
I'm not a bad driver, I have excuses for all of them. Namely, that is all acceptable behavior where I am from. Passing on the right is highly encouraged in RI. As is not using your turn signal. We are more responsible than the rest of you. We keep both hands on the wheel. None of this one handed turn signal sissy stuff!! Do you see race car drivers use turn signals ? I Didn't think so. That's how good we are up here.
My insurance is USAA. Which I am pretty sure stands for when driving, U Should Always Accelerate.
I suppose if you have to have Auto Insurance, USAA is the best there is.
However you may not be able to have it. I can have it. That is because USAA has a requirement based on coolness, at least that is what my parents always told me. I have heard that the real reason is USAA is available for federal government employees, primarily the Military.
Dad was in the military and therefore put me under his insurance when I became old enough to wreak havoc and terror on the wonderful highways of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and occasionally New York and Connecticut.
USAA is wonderful, as far as insurance companies can be anyway.
USAA charges lower than anyone else does for your rates. They also offer a wonderful plan that puts AAA to shame. USAA's plan works as follows.
First, you have to break down or have some other reason to need a response. This is always a bad thing for you. But with USAA they make it as painless as possible.
Call up USAA's auto plan, and they call the closest place they can find with a tow truck and away you and your car go. Did you want it towed to a specific dealership ? Yes they would do that. All no hassle, it just gets done. USAA- for government employees, yet more efficient than a single government office or institution. What sense does that make?
As I mentioned USAA has great rates. For example, I had every discount imagineable and my rate was around 700 something when I started driving at 16. My rates have since climbed of course. Climbed considerably actually. Which is something that greatly annoys me. Why should rates go up when I am not hurting anyone ? Sure I have been stopped for speeding probably about 10 or 15 times since I have gotten my license, big deal. What does getting a ticket prove ? It does not mean I am more of a danger on the road. But all insurance companies seem to see it that way, and use it as a lame excuse to raise rates.
Risk pools are another thing that looks like age discrimination to me. Sure I was in a risk pool, we all have been at one point or the other if we had insurance. But compared to any other insurance company, USAA still had better rates.
USAA is also extremely quick in paying out claims. Having been involved in accidents, USAA has paid me right away, USAA is very concerned about their insured, and they want to put you back in your car and have that car fixed up nice nice as soon as you can. In an age and profession where I see insurance companies waste time and give their insured a lot of trouble before they will even pay anything, USAA makes me thankful Dad was in the military so I could be on their plan. USAA sends an adjuster out right away, wherever you are, within 2 days after you report it, I would say no more than that, you will have the report taken, photos done and watch your mailbox, as your repair estimate will be in there real soon after. Talk about Efficient.
USAA also provides you with a lawyer should you get in an accident and people sue you, and USAA. Of course USAA is liable since you are insured by them, provided you have the correct coverage. Again, I have seen so many people have problems with their insurance companies, they don't keep them informed, they don't follow up on anything and they never return phone calls. USAA is the exact opposite.
USAA, if you have to have insurance, and you can get it, there is none better.
I have the misfortune of living in a state where auto insurance is mandatory, I am also surrounded by states that feel the same way. I can understand the arguments for requiring people to be insured, but to me, it doesn't seem like it ought to be the government's job to watch out for you or I in our own private day to day activities. It also seems very shady to me. What are the odds that insurance lobbies greatly contributed to state legislatures when the bill making auto insurance mandatory came around. Hmmmm I wonder. Just another case of the people getting it stuck to them again. Government has grown way to strong and they require more and more compliance from us everyday. We should all watch out for that.
In sum, USAA - one more letter than the USA.
