Let me tell you about my experience with USAA:
1) I called them and told them that I had been in an accident. I told them where it happened, what tow yard had the car, what body shop I wanted it taken to, and I gave them the phone number of an eye-witness. I also gave them the other driver's info, but I did not have to because it was all contained in the police report, which they accessed through the city.
2) They had my car towed to the body shop and had an estimate within a few days. The car was a write-off and they sent me a check, for a lot more than I expected after a few more days.
3) They called me back and got my version of the story. They also called the witness. They determined that I was not at fault and they sent me a check to cover my deductible a few weeks after that.
That's it!
I have heard many frightening stories about insurance companies, but this was the most painless experience I have ever been through. I know that there are cheaper companies out there, but I would never switch. In fact, I won't even compare prices.
If you only buy insurance because it's the law and you have to, then stick with one of the fly-by-night companies. However, if you are insuring something of value then USAA is the only way to go.
