Pros:Fair prices, profit sharing, sensitive/attentive agents
Cons:recent increase in auto coverage due to random recategorization of neighborhoods
I am fortunate enough to qualify for this insurance coverage, only available to members/veterans of United States military forces and their families. I say fortunate because USAA is more than a auto insurance company, they are a comforting aspect of my adult life. With USAA I have insured:
-- our two cars
-- wife's jewelry
-- home
Also with USAA I have:
-- used their home buying service to locate a fabulous real estate agent who went through USAA training to become part of their referral service.
-- mortgaged my home through them with very competitive rates (no points up front and no penalty for early payoff.)
-- a platinum credit card with a fixed 7.9% APR through their bank
-- received a profit share check from them every December for the last 10 years. Sometimes it's for 12% of my premiums, sometimes it's as little as 5% of my premiums. In any case, it's a welcome present.
I've only needed to use them for small claims so far, and they've been nothing but excellent and attentive. My sister, also a USAA member, had her car totaled a few years ago and received the same attentive, sensitive, fair treatment from them.
The only nit I have with them is that recently they reorganized their coverage areas and my house happened to be categorized into a higher crime sector and my car insurance premiums rose 20%. But, after calling around to see if other companies could beat them, I stayed with USAA because of their still competitive rates and their exemplary service.
