I purchased my first USAA policy in 1974 when I was an ROTC cadet. I have been with them ever since for home, car, and life insurance.

They are just great. They have always been leaders in automation, and even though you may talk to a different person every time you call they always are aware of what was said by the other agents you may have spoken with.

They don't play mickey mouse games when you have a claim. A friends house was destroyed by a tornado here in Austin, and USAA could not have been better at helping him rebuild.

I've never had a major claim, but with teenage drivers I've had my share of fenderbenders. They've always been great. Here in Texas our roofs are often ruined by hail. It has happened to me 3 times in the last 10 years. While my neighbors are begging their companies to come out and look at their roofs, the USAA guy shows up and authorizes a new roof in about 10 minutes.

They bill by the month, and don't get upset if you are a little late.

They don't use local agents, but I've never felt the need for one, and prefer to deal directly with people authorized to make decisions. I guess if you need a physical person to talk to then they may not be for you.
