I use USAA for my auto and home owner's insurance and I have to say it's one payment I don't mind making each month! Every time I have had to deal with them it has been a pleasant, if not actually enjoyable experience! From normal questions about my account, to adding or changing my policies their customer service is helpful and nice - quite a rarity these days!
I was in a pretty bad accident in August of 1999. Although it wasn't my fault I called USAA right away to let them know what had happened. The agent I spoke with told me not to worry about a thing but getting well; they would handle the other driver's insurance even so far as taking them to court if need be. Luckily it didn't go that far but they were there every step of the way - and they didn't have to be.
My mother who also uses USAA and has for years was in an accident in 1998 that was her fault. It was pretty bad and her brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee was nearly totalled. She also shattered her hand and had to go through quite a bit of therapy over the span of a few months. Not only did they pay for every cent of the repairs and her treatment, they called to check up on her from time to time and even sent a get well card! When her new six month policy rolled around she was scared to see what her rate would jump to but low and behold, it didn't! It did go up a tiny bit but after all they had spent on her medical bills, and rebuilding her cars (and the two others involved) she expected the worst. I guess being a long term customer with a good driving record actually means something with them.
I don't know that USAA is the cheapest insurance company out there but it's well worth the money. I can trust with them that I will get the help I need when I need it. Thankfully I have never had to use them for home repairs or an auto accident that is my fault, but I feel confident that they will be there for me if I need them.
I have heard complaints that you don't have a local agent that you can get to know so it's not personal but this is not true at all. When you call them, even for something as simple as making a change to your account, the agent will usually say "Ok my name is XXX and here is my extension. Call me if you have any problems". I don't care if they are located on the moon if they take care of me!
